NELA's Welcome Wagon presents BDSM Health & Safety -- 101 to Master's Level

Are you kinky enough?
Is your kink "real"?
What if you "only stay just this amount of kinky"?
Is kink linear?
How do you even begin?
What is a good starting toy? Scene? Event?
How do you get invited to things?
Most importantly*, what do you wear???

*Kidding. Mostly.

Newcomers & Seasoned Kinksters: $10 pre-paid (http://nelaonline.org/event-ticket-sales/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14&products_id=46&zenid=3a82e102395fefc34276ed85b24f60eff)/$15 cash/check at the door/discounts for NELA associates and affiliated groups (please bring your up-to-date group card)

7:00pm: Community Overview: Find out about local groups and upcoming classes and events. By attending, you'll be eligible for a drawing for a fun prize, too!

7:30pm: Mix & Mingle: Part icebreaker, part low-pressure social time, take this opportunity to connect with other new folks and talk with established community folks who'll do their best to answer your questions. Ooh, and there'll be snacks!

8:00pm: PhoenixB presents BDSM Health & Safety Class -- 101 to Master's Level: Seasoned kinksters and newcomers alike are welcome to attend this class. Full class description below! (We are asking that folks who have been in the kink world for a while respect the newcomers' space from 7:00pm-8:00pm, but please do join us for the class at 8:00pm! And we'll save some snacks for you, too!)

Being new to kink is a time of exploration and discovery; it can also feel a little overwhelming!

NELA's Welcome Wagon (http://nelaonline.org/cmsms/index.php?page=fleadomtrail-sig) is for tops, bottoms, switches, and undeclareds. Groups like NEDS and Mob have awesome orientations as part of membership, but folks who aren't necessarily looking to or ready to join a group still can use a friendly face, some helpful hints, and a place to meet other new folks, to ask questions, and to get community information. The idea of the Fleadom Trail -- a play on Boston's "Freedom Trail," navigating the twisty turns and landmarks with a guide -- was created to give attendees to NELA's Fetish Fair Fleamarkets a boost up, a community member to turn to, and a way to figure out how to get the most out of the event. Working from that jumping-off point, NELA's Welcome Wagon events at Unity Somerville -- with snacks, presenter, and class topic focused on new folks -- is low-pressure and welcoming. There'll be nice people to meet. There'll be hand-outs with information on local events. And there'll be me, someone who likes trying to answer questions or directing you to someone who has the answer.

NELA's Welcome Wagon is also for seasoned kinksters, kinksters who may already have found or created community for themselves, kinksters who know where to go, how to get invited, how they fit into the greater kink world or scene. While seasoned kinksters are asked to not attend the Welcome Wagon until 8:00pm to give the newer folks time to mingle with each other (from 7:00pm-8:00pm), seasoned kinksters are very much invited to attend the class and meet some fresh faces. And have snacks!

Consider NELA's Welcome Wagon events to be a gateway, a stepping stone, a low-key and fun way to orient yourself within the broader local kink world!

(Please be 18+.)

Unity Somerville is only three walking blocks from the Red Line's Davis Square T-stop; metered street parking is available.

Our 8:00pm presenter: PhoenixB
Phoenix's "official" entrance into the Seattle BDSM community was by joining the local SM Dyke club, Outer Limits in 1985. From there Phoenix quickly went on to become a coordinator in that organization until it closed in the mid-90's. Phoenix is the co-founder/producer of the well-known and highly-regarded Wicked Womyn SM conference in Seattle. Phoenix also served as a coordinator for PowerSurge Conferences in the 1990's as well. Phoenix has taught many workshops across the USA, Europe, and Canada for over 20 years on master's level health and safety, play piercing, artistic cutting, suturing, fire play, blood drawing, flogging, and Japanese rope harness. Phoenix has also produced a video "On The Cutting Edge" that was accepted for the highly respected Seattle Erotic Arts Festival. Phoenix also loves "hooks" and has facilitated many energy pulls and suspensions.

Phoenix believes it is important to share knowledge about SM techniques but also to listen and learn from others as well. Phoenix has many interests, but motorcycle riding and service bois are some favorites. Phoenix identifies as a Two-Spirit Native (Cree First Nations/Scots), Gender Queer, Top, Sir, and Daddy, and has a particular fondness for having boots shined.

BDSM Health & Safety Class -- 101 to Master's Level:
No matter how much experience you have in BDSM, whether you are a top or bottom, you WILL learn something new in this class that will help you play safer. This class is an opportunity to become aware of the potential hazards of and learn safety guidelines for dungeon and private S/M play. Learn about what your chances are of contracting HIV or hepatitis; what to do if you've been exposed to a blood-borne pathogen; and what kinds of things a bottom can look for in a top to assure their own safety against contracting an infection. We will cover risk reduction techniques; blood-borne pathogen awareness and concerns; STIs/STDs and HIV; proper glove use in S/M; some of the appropriate cleaning materials for skin; how to clean and disinfect dungeon equipment, and more.
